Our Story

A Promise to Remember

The Veteran Memorial Project was born not in a boardroom, but from a lifetime of service and a family history marked by sacrifice.
For our founder, Dan Kost, the military wasn’t just a career path; it was a family tradition. Nearly every adult man in his family served, a lineage of duty that Dan continued as an Army veteran. But as he looked back on his family’s history, he realized that for every service member who came home, there were stories of those who didn’t—and the quiet pain of the families left behind.
The inspiration for this project comes from three distinct tragedies that shaped Dan’s understanding of remembrance.

The Echo of World War II First, there was the story of his uncle, Andrew Kost, a man Dan never got the chance to meet. He died serving in World War II long before Dan was born. Growing up, this uncle wasn’t a physical presence, but a memory held alive by stories—a hero frozen in time, whose absence was felt at every family gathering.
The Long Shadow of Vietnam Then came the loss of his cousin. He survived the jungles of Vietnam, but the war didn’t end when he came home. He eventually succumbed to the injuries and wounds he sustained in service. As the years passed and the older generation of the family faded away, a new tragedy emerged: the location of his final resting place was lost to time. Today, it takes immense effort just to find out where he is buried. That experience planted a seed in Dan’s mind: No family should ever struggle to find their hero.
The Spark: Beirut, 1983The turning point came with the loss of his cousin, John Weyl. A proud U.S. Marine, John was killed in the Beirut barracks bombing in 1983. It was a devastating blow to the family. Months before she passed away, John’s mother (Dan’s aunt) made a pilgrimage to the Beirut Memorial in North Carolina.
Dan hadn’t even known the memorial existed until she made that trip. When she returned, she spoke of the peace she found in finally seeing his name carved in stone. But she also highlighted a difficult truth: for many families, these memorials are hundreds or thousands of miles away, often impossible to visit.

Our Mission

Our Mission That realization birthed the Veteran Memorial Project. We believe that distance should never separate a family from their loved ones’ legacy.
We are dedicated to creating the world’s largest directory of virtual military memorial tours. Our goal is simple: to ensure that whether you are a mother in Colorado or a grandson in Florida, you can stand virtually before the names of those who served. We are building this for the families who need to visit now, for the historians of the future, and for the simple belief that while we may lose our soldiers, we must never lose their stories.
